The Tale of the Ghost of Korr
"He betrayed me, that terrible man. He took it, took— no, no, I won't tell you what he took, but he betrayed me, and he will betray you, too, if you see him. Do not trust him. You will know him if you see him. His hair is long and windblown, it was once brown but now it is shot with gray. His beard, too. He has friendly eyes, and he will pretend to be friendly, he will feed you and invite you to his fire, and then, when you trust him, when you sleep, he will betray you. You can know him. He wears a skirt of wool, and sweeping cape. It is green, with lines, thick lines of white and thin lines of red. He will smile at you, and then you will know it is him, and you will know to beware."
"What brought you here, so far from the sea?"
"Brought? I was not brought, no, I ran here. Up, over the mountains. Away, away from—oh no, no, I can't tell you that. No, don't make me think about that. I ran, until I ached. The wolves howled. The tall ones, the ones with one eye, one eye that burns, do not go to them. They would not help. No, they just looked at me with their one eye until I could not stand it anymore, so I ran, and I climbed the mountain, and there were others, but I did not let them see me, and it was cold, and the rain was frozen, and the wind cut off my clothes, but if I could put the mountain between me and—and that thing that I ran from, I would be safe. So I came here, and that man found me, and betrayed me."
"Where are your people?"
"You'd like to know, wouldn't you? I'll tell you. They went up the river, they did. Ran, like chickens with their wings clipped. Took the ship and ran, left me and my brothers—brother, yes, my brother, I mean. May they sink to the bottom and be eaten by eels."
"Where are your brothers?"
"Brother. Yes. My brother. He is dead. Both of them. Him. Rot his cowardly fingerless body. Rot—
[at this point the conversation is interrupted by the arrival of two demons]
